On July 5, 2010, Pinewood Toronto Studios hosted royalty when Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip stopped by as part of their 2010 Royal Tour. The visit showcased the innovation and strong infrastructure of the Ontario film and television industry and the A-level facilities at Pinewood Toronto Studios.
“She was not at all what I expected,” Paul Bronfman, chairman of Pinewood Toronto Studios said after the visit. “She's very well versed in music, politics, film... absolutely charming and engaging, and she looks you in the eye.”
After a luncheon with dignitaries and key industry players, the Royal Couple went behind the scenes of the Pinewood-based Screen Industries Research and Training (SIRT). There, they watched a scene filmed using stereoscopic 3-D technology. The scene was an interpretive excerpt of 1812, a miniseries currently in development, which was directed by award-winning Deepa Mehta.
Her Majesty and His Royal Highness then viewed the playback with her own personalized Pinewood 3-D glasses.
“Pinewood Toronto Studios is one of the leading film and television production facilities in North America and it was an absolute delight to host the Queen,” said Edith Myers, managing director for Pinewood Toronto Studios. “She was heard to have said Sheridan’s 3-D demonstration was ‘fantastic.’”
Thank you to the Ontario government, SIRT and the cast and crew of 1812 for helping make this day a success.
